AMT - Alternative Minimum Tax

The Alternative Minimum Tax system in the United States was developed to stop the upper-end incomes from using tax loopholes to avoid paying their fair share of the tax burden. Unfortunately, when the AMT system was written into law for the wealthy, somebody forgot to consider inflation. Today, many non-wealthy income levels are falling into the mandatory Alternative Minimum Tax system of AMT taxing rules.

Each year, more and more middle-class taxpayers are shocked after filing their normal Form 1040 style of taxes to find notes from the IRS in their mailbox explaining that they are wealthy, in a new tax bracket, and that their income tax returns must be filed under a completely different set of tax rules. The IRS Alternative Minimum Tax system runs alongside of the normal tax system with a different set of deductions and credits to use.

The AMT rules for filing the Alternative Minimum Tax returns were not written for the common taxpayer to accomplish without help. When the AMT rules were written, it was with the assumption that all wealthy taxpayers have a trained CPA on staff. For many middle-class income homes, a CPA is out of the question after the Alternative Minimum Tax system terminates their deduction for state and local income taxes.

The IRS is completely aware of the problems happening with their Alternative Minimum Tax system. For years, Congress has passed temporary yearly changes to the AMT tax system to provide a fairer AMT tax situation for the middle-income levels than would be allowed under the original taxing rules. This helpful temporary AMT fix is in place again for tax year 2009.

Many people are finding that it is possible to prepare their Alternative Minimum Tax forms easily at an online tax preparation site. A computerized program takes the AMT taxpayer through a series of simple questions about their tax situation and the answers result in a professionally completed Alternative Minimum Tax filing for the IRS. Users at the online tax sites do not need to have any prior tax knowledge; they are easy to use.
